I believe I have this kind of ivy tree in my back yard. We are taking them out to put up a fence instead of a chain link, and thought they were trees with ivy at the base. It turns out they are from the same branch, and have the berries also. I can't believe ivy would turn to a tree. Thank you for the picture and the story, now I know what I have in my back yard.

I believe that you are deeply confused, as spray painting can not be compared to building Inukshuks in the wild. Spray painting is simply vandalizing someone else’s vandalism, the original vandalism being the concrete wall or bridge side. The Inukshuk doesn’t harm the land or any of the creatures that live within it. It will one day fall like all things in this world, and the stones will barely remember the day they were balanced atop one another, and the stones will, and already have outlived us all.
My people have built stone cairns and Inukshuks for hundreds of generations. It is not up to you or anyone to define what an Inukshuk is. An Inukshuk represents only the intention the builder put into it, as it always has. When I am in the wild and I stumble upon an Inukshuk I get a divine feeling of connection to the earth and to my fellow people. It doesn't matter what your color or sex or age is either. I build Inukshuks and Cairns as a form of worship to the earth and the divine. I balance rocks and let it represent the balances between + and - or yin and yang energy. I feel the stones on my skin and I am handshaking the land.
Human destruction of the environment should be the number ONE concern for us as a society. Inukshuks and Cairns should remind us of the divine connection between humans and the earth, the Inukshuk itself being the bridge between the two.
Though I respect all other people’s opinions I would hate to see a day when a substantial amount of people view these sacred relics of people as an eyesore.
The true eyesore is "civilization". When I walk I often feel pavement beneath my feet and I see concrete towering way up into the sky. This is an eyesore on our land, and before things were ever this way people were basking in the wonders of nature and building monuments such as cairns and Inukshuks to honor its sacredness.
Namaste, Logan

Loved the quote on your home page. Please do not count this following request as spam....I am arts educator compiling a list of quotes to share with artists. If you would be so kind (and the rest of your readers), to add that quote to my sketching and drawing essays and tips website: www.gardenandhearth.com/SketchingandDrawing.htm
In the spirit of reciprocity: "To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter... to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird's nest or a wildflower in spring - these are some of the rewards of the simple life." -John Burroughs, naturalist and writer.

My compliments on your website. I was doing an internet search on native plants and came across your page. I never heard of your organization before and therefore did not know where you are based (I did eventually figure it out, however). I would like to make a suggestion that would be helpful to people like me who stumble across your site. On your page that identifies the appropriate plants for particular soils, you may want to include a caution that these plants are native to your area only; they are in fact invasive elsewhere. It would be a shame for a well-intentioned person in a different part of the world to mistakenly believe that these plants are native to their area. Please consider advising the browser to check

Question: I am a native Central American living in the USA for the last 20 years. I am a 34 yr. old woman. I am hoping to return to my country (Nicaragua) for an exploratory study. Hope to find a place for my growing heart to flourish and bloom to full and then some. My question: would a seasonal caretaking position in my country be right for someone in my circumstances?

Sometimes its difficult to try and look for the bright side of things,.. and then I wonder how Tom does it,... all the time. Thanks for al the great articles.

Very well done. I really wanted to go to the class but was unable. Excellent pictures with a good explanations. Also, thanks for mentioning the Conservancy fund that was set up to save the land around the Medicine Waters. In the back-to-back in 2000, Kevin mentioned that they wanted to buy the land but it required a lot more money than they had available. I'm pleased to see that they finally set up the foundation for some fundraising. The pictures from that area were particularly alarming, by the way. Great job.

Enjoyed the caretaker 2001 site very much. As a former environmentalist dealing with issues involving the Great Lakes water basin, I would like to offer a suggestion regarding the Boy Scout beach erosion problem. Littoral drift, which is the movement of silt, sand and soil, can be controlled by adding material up current of the beach. Dams, piers, walls, and sand bars can slow down or stop this flow, depending on weather or not you use solid or a more open weave type of the structure. Think beaver. Prayers all around, Bright Star

This web page is awesome! I am impressed with your motivation and creativity it spreading this information that is so desperately needed. I have taken 5 classes with Tom and will be taking my sixth shortly, but have yet to take the Caretaker class. I will be buying land shortly and plan on utilizing all of my skills to inhabit and rehabilitate the land and this information will be vital. Since many of us make very little money and cannot afford to take all the classes, yet NEED to know this information, it is so awesome to see it out here for free and from a reliable source. Thanks!

We who live, or who are learning to live, as caretakers of Earth Mother are so very small in numbers as compared to the mindless gray masses. How do we encourage those who view our Mother and her children as commodity to become closer to nature; to feel how we feel? This question enters my thought daily and the one hopeful feeling that occurs every time is "teach the children"; get them started EARLY walking barefoot in the woods and fields and inspire their inquisitive minds through coyote teaching. Adults can be awaken, I realized society's path was hollow at 28, but I think they must realize this same hollow feeling first. Get involved with environmental activist groups, take tracker school and wilderness awareness
